Mother, Jackline Kaingu is at a meeting at her daughters school to discuss the benefits of the feeding program recently implemented at the school by Plan International. Nursing a baby in her arms, Jackline raises her hand to say something on behalf of the parents. “The school feeding program has been such a huge relief for us parents because our children are now guaranteed at least one meal a day, even in times of severe shortages.” The effects of drought in Kenya has been so severe in Kilifi County that many communities have lost their livestock and farmers have experienced two consecutive failed harvests. Official government reports show that an estimated 250,000 people are in dire need of food aid in the county. Plan International Kenya is working in partnership with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) to provide daily meals of rice and green beans to 94 pre-schools in the county. The project initially aimed to feed 7,000 students, but is now catering for at least 10,000 children aged between 4 to 6 years. The regularly nourishing meals have made a huge difference to the children as parent Purity Kisao has observed. “My child comes back home satisfied and happy, having eaten rice at school. I am very happy with the school feeding program and would be grateful if it could continue beyond August so that our children can keep being well fed.” #schoolfeedingprogram #education #kenya #drought #food
